Owen Wilson to Play Trump in Coppola-Helmed Biopic
Owen Wilson, beloved for his portrayal of dimwitted supermodel Hansel in the Zoolander films, will portray Donald J. Trump in a presidential biopic. None other than Godfather-director Francis Ford Coppola will helm the project, written by Paul Schrader and produced by Albert R. Broccoli. Along with Harry Saltzman, Broccoli is best known as having produced all 24 James Bond films since Dr. No in 1962.
As quoted in Variety this past week, Broccoli explained what drew him to the project. “Owen just looks so much like the guy, I just couldn’t resist. I mean, I don’t know if you fully understand this, but I’m freaking rich as shit. 24 damn Bond movies, breh! I got the guap, trust me."
Oh, we trust you, Mr. Broccoli.
Wilson’s publicist, Vaughan Chauncey, said in a Tweet, “OWilson says: 'playing TheRealDonaldTrump is a dream come true. I mean wow. DJ Trump! Just Wow!"
Francis Ford Coppola, whose last box office success was 1997’s The Rainmaker, will receive a record $43 million to come out of semi-retirement and create“a swirling, intrigue-laden story of family, money, and murder, with the feel of a spy thriller, the scope of a swords-and-sandals epic, and the sounds of the old country," as described by Coppola in a handwritten letter to Broccoli from his villa in Sicily.
The producers are in talks with Iggy Pop to compose the score along with John Ottman (The Usual Suspects, X-Men: Apocalypse), the latter of whom is also on the short list for editor.
